Born in 1915 to enterprising German immigrants Lester and Pearl Spratt, William was immersed in a world of entrepreneurship from an early age. His initiation into operating trucks and equipment in his youth laid the groundwork for a remarkable trajectory that would define his life.

At the age of 26, William’s life took an unforeseen turn when he was drafted in Toledo, Ohio, on March 10th, 1941. His journey in the Army began with basic training followed by driving school, setting the stage for an unexpected yet impactful role as a driver for the Army.

A chance encounter with destiny occurred one fateful night when, on a bet, he went on a driving run that led him to pick up Lieutenant General Hodges. This serendipitous meeting forged a bond based on honesty, catapulting William into the role of Hodges’s trusted driver for a significant part of World War II.

Amidst the chaos of wartime, William’s role as a chauffeur and bodyguard placed him at the heart of pivotal moments and crucial decisions that would shape the course of history.

Following five years of commendable service, William returned home to Toledo, Ohio, where he embraced the entrepreneurial legacy of his father. He charted his path as a business owner, starting with a modest truck.

Years later, William retraced his steps to Germany on an anniversary tour alongside others who served with him.
